Al Maaref University, shortly known as MU, is a newly developed not-for-profit university in Lebanon. It is a private university that got an official decree of establishment (N.7265)〔Official Journal (2013), Al-Maaref University Decree Number 7265, Lebanon: Council of Ministers, Issue 1., at http://jo.pcm.gov.lb/j2012/j1/wfm/m7265.htm 〕 by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) on 22 December 2011. Al-Maaref University is accounted to date the 33rd university that is officially recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE).〔http://www.mehe.gov.lb/Templates/HomePage.aspx〕 Despite that the university is an independent organization with full decision making authority, it is currently a legal subsidiary organization of the Islamic Association of Learning and Education (IALE) that has been operating since 1995. == History == In the first published University Prospectus dated July 2015, the University positioned its ethos in a legacy of “transcendental wisdom that has an accumulation of theoretical and practical knowledge for more than 1400 years for the purpose of building the right scientific mind for human development and advancement”.〔Al-Maaref university Prospectus (2015). Al-Maaref University: Mastering Life with Wisdom and Knowledge, Beirut.〕 The university, accordingly, perceives its administrative and academic activities as having an organic cultural lineage that is grounded in the region. Al-Maaref University is guided by the Article 10 of the Lebanese Constitution,〔Lebanese Constitution (1995) . Palgrave Macmillan〕 as initiated by the National Reconciliation Accord (Taef Agreement), and the international conventions for economic, social and cultural rights. The University is committed to have a role in crystallizing the best facets of socio-economic and cultural life inside and outside Lebanon by means of science and knowledge. The idea of Al-Maaref University is unique, considering the emergence of a mosaic of universities of different visions and affiliations in the last two decades. It is an institution that is inspired by a national duty that calls for overcoming the rubrics and intricacies of sectarianism that is shaping the Lebanese society. It should be noted that the organic start of the Al-Maaref University’s operations will be determined for a while by local and regional concerns and demands. The mission is to widen the access to quality education for the members of the Lebanese communities who have not had yet an opportunity to enter into higher education. Despite acquiring a permission to establish the MU university in 2011, the project's stakeholders had kept a low profile of operation until the political, social and economic circumstances came to fruition by January 2015. In less than six months, the university had managed steadily to create a full university set-up in terms of a main campus off the Airport Avenue in preparation to get the approval for starting its academic operations and courses delivery from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education by the second week of October 2015. The initial plans of Al-Maaref University consisted of establishing a faculty of engineering and two faculties in social sciences. However, the engineering faculty was postponed after consultation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. The alternative option for the third faculty was settled on Religions and Humanities. As well, the place of operation changed from Haret Al-Hureik to Be’er Hassan area, off Airport Avenue in Beirut. Despite Al-Maaref University is a private institution, its mission, vision, values and legality are steered to overcome some of the shortages of the public educational institutions in the Lebanese higher education.
